1) Disconnect the battery. This will prevent you from accidentally starting the car while you are working on it.
2) Locate the neutral safety switch. On the 1998 Dodge Neon, it is located on the transmission, just above the gearshift linkage.
3) Disconnect the electrical connector from the neutral safety switch. There may be a release tab or button that you need to press in order to disconnect the connector.
4) Remove the two bolts that hold the neutral safety switch in place. You will need a ratchet and a socket wrench to do this.
5) Remove the old neutral safety switch from the transmission.
6) Install the new neutral safety switch. Make sure that the gasket is properly seated between the switch and the transmission.
7) Replace the two bolts that hold the neutral safety switch in place.
8) Reconnect the electrical connector to the neutral safety switch.
9) Reconnect the battery.
NOTE: You will need to adjust the neutral safety switch once it is installed. This can be done by turning the key in the ignition to the ON position and then moving the gearshift through all of the gears. If the car starts in any gear other than neutral, the neutral safety switch will need to be adjusted.
