Tools and Materials:
- Phillips head screwdriver
- Flat head screwdriver
- Socket wrench set
- 10 mm socket
- 12 mm socket
- Hammer
- Pry bar
- New ignition barrel
Step-by-Step Instructions:
1. Disconnect the battery. Before you begin any work on the ignition barrel, it is important to disconnect the battery to prevent any electrical shocks. To do this, locate the negative battery terminal (usually marked with a "-" sign) and loosen the nut that holds the cable in place. Once the nut is loose, remove the cable from the terminal and set it aside.
2. Remove the steering column cover. The steering column cover is the plastic housing that surrounds the ignition barrel. To remove it, you will need to use a Phillips head screwdriver to remove the screws that hold it in place. Once the screws are removed, carefully pry the cover off of the steering column.
3. Remove the ignition switch lock cylinder. The ignition switch lock cylinder is the part of the ignition barrel that you insert the key into. To remove it, you will need to use a flat head screwdriver to pry the lock cylinder retaining clip out of place. Once the clip is removed, you can pull the lock cylinder out of the ignition barrel.
4. Remove the ignition switch. The ignition switch is the part of the ignition barrel that is connected to the wiring. To remove it, you will need to use a 10 mm socket to loosen the bolts that hold it in place. Once the bolts are loose, you can pull the ignition switch out of the ignition barrel.
5. Install the new ignition switch. To install the new ignition switch, simply insert it into the ignition barrel and tighten the bolts that hold it in place.
6. Install the ignition switch lock cylinder. To install the ignition switch lock cylinder, simply insert it into the ignition barrel and push it in until it clicks into place.
7. Install the steering column cover. To install the steering column cover, simply place it over the steering column and secure it with the screws that you removed earlier.
8. Reconnect the battery. Once you have finished installing the new ignition barrel, you can reconnect the battery by attaching the negative battery cable to the terminal and tightening the nut.
Test the new ignition barrel by inserting the key and turning it to the "On" position. The engine should start and run smoothly. If everything is working properly, you can replace the steering column cover and you're all set!
