Note: Disconnecting the battery is always the first and most important step when working on any electrical system.
Tools and Materials Needed
• Wrenches (various sizes)
• Socket set (metric and standard)
• Screwdrivers (flathead and Phillips)
• Hammer
• Pliers
• Replacement starter
• New gasket (if needed)
Instructions
1. Disconnect the battery.
> - Locate the negative (-) battery terminal.
> - Using a wrench, loosen the nut or bolt that holds the negative battery cable to the terminal.
> - Remove the negative battery cable from the terminal.
2. Remove the air cleaner housing.
> - Locate the air cleaner housing on the passenger side of the engine.
> - Loosen the clamps or screws that hold the air cleaner housing in place.
> - Remove the air cleaner housing.
3. Remove the starter relay.
> - Locate the starter relay on the passenger side of the engine bay, near the battery.
> - Remove the two bolts that hold the starter relay in place.
> - Disconnect the electrical connections from the starter relay.
4. Remove the starter motor.
> - Locate the starter motor on the bottom of the engine, near the transmission bell housing.
> - Remove the two bolts that hold the starter motor in place.
> - Remove the starter motor.
5. Inspect the starter motor and replace if necessary.
> - Inspect the starter motor for damage or wear.
> - If the starter motor is damaged or worn, replace it with a new one.
> - If the contacts are damaged, they can be replaced using a starter contact repair kit.
> - Install the new starter solenoid and secure with bolts that were removed.
> - If the contact studs on the starter motor are worn or damaged, they should be replaced with heavy duty contact studs.
6. Reinstall the starter motor.
> - Insert the starter motor into the starter motor mounting hole.
> - Install the two bolts that hold the starter motor in place.
> - Tighten the bolts to the specified torque.
7. Reinstall the starter relay.
> - Locate the starter relay on the passenger side of the engine bay, near the battery.
> - Connect the electrical connections to the starter relay.
> - Install the two bolts that hold the starter relay in place.
> - Tighten the bolts to the specified torque.
8. Reinstall the air cleaner housing.
> - Locate the air cleaner housing on the passenger side of the engine.
> - Install the air cleaner housing.
> - Tighten the clamps or screws that hold the air cleaner housing in place.
9. Reconnect the battery.
> - Locate the negative (-) battery terminal.
> - Install the negative battery cable onto the terminal.
> - Tighten the nut or bolt that holds the negative battery cable to the terminal.
That should complete changing the starter motor in your 1993 525i BMW!
