How do I set the cam on a 4hg1 Isuzu?

1. Remove the valve cover.

2. Turn the crankshaft until the piston in the first cylinder is at top dead center (TDC). The flywheel has 3 marks for TDC. TDC on compression and two for TDC of the exhaust. The cylinder should be near TDC if the cam is close so look first for the intake valve (front one of the 2 at front or back of cylinder head) completely closed and the exhaust valve just starting to open. When the intake closes and the exhaust is just beginning to open, rotate the crankshaft until the "0" mark on the flywheel aligns with the stationary indicator.

3. Loosen the camshaft sprocket bolt.

4. Align the camshaft sprocket timing marks with the marks on the cylinder head and the timing chain (if your chain doesn’t have the colored links, look at the chain links as you turn the cam, note the one at the top of the camshaft sprocket now and turn cam until the next link that looks the same is at the top).

5. Tighten the camshaft sprocket bolt.

6. Replace the valve cover.

7. Start the engine and verify the timing with a timing light.
