1. Locate the timing marks. There are two timing marks on the engine: one on the harmonic balancer and one on the timing cover. The mark on the harmonic balancer is a small notch, while the mark on the timing cover is a small raised bump.
2. Align the timing marks. To do this, you will need to use a timing light. Connect the timing light to the battery and then point it at the timing marks. Turn the engine over until the notch on the harmonic balancer lines up with the raised bump on the timing cover.
3. Adjust the distributor. Once the timing marks are aligned, you will need to adjust the distributor. To do this, loosen the distributor hold-down bolt and then rotate the distributor until the engine runs smoothly.
4. Tighten the distributor hold-down bolt. Once the engine is running smoothly, tighten the distributor hold-down bolt.
