2. Locate the slack adjuster. It is usually a small, round device located on the bottom of the brake assembly.
3. Use a pry bar to turn the slack adjuster clockwise until the brake shoes are snug against the brake drum.
4. Release the pry bar and check to see if the brake pedal travels the same distance as it did before. If it does, the slack adjuster is properly adjusted.
5. If the brake pedal travels further than it did before, the slack adjuster needs to be adjusted further. Repeat steps 3 and 4 until the brake pedal travels the same distance as it did before.
6. Once the slack adjuster is properly adjusted, test the brakes by applying them several times. The brakes should feel firm and should not grab or pulsate.
