The speed sensor on the 1982-92 Chevrolet Cavalier is located on the transmission. It is a small, cylindrical-shaped sensor with a single wire coming from it. The sensor is located on the driver's side of the transmission, just below the throttle body.
To remove the speed sensor:
1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
2. Raise the front of the vehicle and support it on jack stands.
3. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
4. Disconnect the electrical connector from the speed sensor.
5. Use a 7/16-inch wrench to loosen the speed sensor retaining bolt.
6. Pull the speed sensor out of the transmission.
To install the speed sensor:
1. Insert the new speed sensor into the transmission.
2. Install the speed sensor retaining bolt and tighten it to 10 ft-lbs.
3. Connect the electrical connector to the speed sensor.
4. Lower the vehicle.
5. Reconnect the negative battery terminal.
Note: The speed sensor is a critical component of the vehicle's emissions control system. If the speed sensor is not functioning properly, it can cause the vehicle to run rough or stall. If you are experiencing any problems with the vehicle's performance, it is important to have the speed sensor checked by a qualified mechanic.
