How long does a tow company have to keep your car before selling it?

It depends on the state laws where the vehicle was towed. Typically, the towing company will contact you within 24 hours of the tow and provide a lien notice. This lien notice will state that you have a certain amount of time (typically 30 days) to claim your vehicle or the towing company will have the right to sell it.

Additionally, most states require the towing company to send a preliminary notice of sale to the owner of the vehicle at least 14 days before the vehicle can be sold. This notice must include the following information:

* The name and address of the towing company

* The name of the registered owner of the vehicle

* The make, model, and license plate number of the vehicle

* The date and time the vehicle was towed

* The total amount of charges owed for towing and storage

* The date and time of the intended sale

If you do not pay off the towing and storage charges before the sale, the towing company will be able to sell the vehicle to a salvage yard or other buyer.
