Right hand drive vehicles in California?

Right-hand drive (RHD) vehicles are rare but legal in California. However, there are some restrictions on where and how they can be driven.

* Vehicle registration: In order to register an RHD vehicle, it may be necessary to contact the California Highway Patrol (CHP) to determine if vehicle standards can be met. However, the CHP only inspects vehicles upon initial importation into the state and not upon sale or transfer of ownership.

* Driving restrictions: RHD vehicles cannot be operated on the left-hand side of the roadways. They may be driven on right-hand shoulders, but only when necessary. For example, this could include avoiding obstacles or hazards in the right-hand lane. Driving an RHD vehicle on the left-hand side of the road can be potentially hazardous as the driver may not be able to see oncoming traffic coming from the right side.

* Headlights: RHD vehicles must have left-hand headlights that meet the same standards as those for left-hand drive (LHD) vehicles. Left-hand headlights help illuminate the road ahead on the right-hand side of the vehicle, as well as the left side.

RHD vehicles are often imported from countries where they are more common, such as the United Kingdom, Japan, and Australia. They can also be converted from LHD vehicles.
