Original Medicare (Parts A and B) does not cover mobility scooters (also called electric scooters, power scooters, or motorized scooters) outside rare instances where you would be using it as a wheelchair substitute. These rare examples include circumstances where using a wheelchair would not be practicable and you experience severe difficulty walking.
Certain private Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans may cover the cost of mobility scooters, but not all. If you have a Medicare Advantage plan, reach out to your plan provider directly for more information on its policy regarding mobility scooter coverage.
