Do you need to have insurance on a car when transferring the title?

In most US states, you do not need to have insurance when transferring a car title. However, some states require proof of insurance in order to register the vehicle, so it's important to check with your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to determine the requirements in your state.

If you are transferring a car title to someone else, you will typically need to provide the following documentation to the DMV:

- The vehicle's title, signed by both the buyer and the seller

- A completed Application for Title and Registration (Form MV-1)

- Proof of insurance (in some states)

- Payment of any applicable fees

Once the title is transferred, the new owner will be responsible for obtaining insurance on the vehicle.
