From the seller:
- Vehicle title, properly assigned to you
- Vehicle registration
- Odometer disclosure statement (if the vehicle is newer than 1981)
- Emissions inspection certificate (if applicable)
- Proof of insurance
- If the seller has a loan on the vehicle, they will need to provide a lien release from the lender
From the buyer:
- Driver's license
- Proof of insurance
Step 2: Complete the Bill of Sale.
The Bill of Sale is a legal document that transfers ownership of the vehicle from the seller to the buyer. It must be completed in its entirety and signed by both the seller and the buyer. The following information must be included on the Bill of Sale:
- The full name and address of the seller
- The full name and address of the buyer
- The date of the sale
- The purchase price of the vehicle
- The year, make, model, and VIN number of the vehicle
Step 3: Transfer the title.
Once the Bill of Sale is completed, you must transfer the title to the vehicle to your name. To do this, you must visit your local title office. The following fees must be paid:
- Title transfer fee
- Vehicle registration fee
- Sales tax (if applicable)
Step 4: Register the vehicle.
After you have transferred the title, you must register the vehicle to your name. To do this, you must visit your local DMV office. The following fees must be paid:
- Vehicle registration fee
- License plate fee
Step 5: Insure the vehicle.
You are required to have insurance on the vehicle if you will be driving it on public roads. To obtain insurance, you will need to contact an insurance company and provide them with the following information:
- The year, make, and model of the vehicle
- The VIN number of the vehicle
- Your driver's license number
- Your address
Step 6: Get the vehicle inspected
Emissions inspections are required for vehicles that are 2 years or newer and are located within the Enhanced Emission Testing area. An emissions inspection station will provide a certificate upon completion of the test.
Note: If the vehicle is being gifted or sold for less than $1,500. then the transfer of the title is not taxed.
