The North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) requires that all light vehicles 14 model years old or newer, weighing under 10,000 pounds, undergo annual safety and emissions inspections. Diesel-powered vehicles that are 10 model years old or newer must also undergo an annual emissions inspection. Inspections must be performed by an authorized emissions or inspection mechanic within 30 days of the vehicle’s renewal date.
