1. File a Police Report
> Contact your local police department and file a report with the officer on duty. They will issue a police report or incident number, which will be required to replace the ownership.
2. Apply for a Vehicle Ownership Duplicate
> Visit any ServiceOntario centre and request a vehicle ownership duplicate (formerly called a Vehicle Permit). Take the following documents with you:
- the police report or incident number
- your driver's licence or Ontario Photo Card
- if the lost ownership was for a commercial vehicle, proof you can operate a commercial vehicle (e.g. a commercial driver's licence)
3. Pay the Lost Ownership Replacement Fee
> You will need to pay a fee for the lost ownership replacement. This fee varies depending on the type of vehicle you own - standard vehicles are $32 while oversized vehicles are $64.
4. Wait for the Replacement Ownership to Arrive
> After submitting your application and fee, it will take approximately two weeks for the replacement ownership to arrive by mail.
_NB: _If you require proof of ownership immediately, you can ask the Service Ontario representative for a "Temporary Ownership Receipt". This receipt is valid for 30 days and can serve as proof of ownership while you wait for the replacement ownership to arrive._
