How do you change brake pads on a car with ABS?

Changing Brake Pads on a Car with ABS

Tools and Materials Needed

- New brake pads

-Socket set

-Wrench

-Screwdriver

-C-clamp

-Brake fluid

-Safety glasses

Instructions

1. Park the car on a level surface and turn off the engine. Engage the parking brake.

2. Locate the brake fluid reservoir under the hood of the car. Remove the cap from the reservoir.

3. Use a C-clamp to compress the brake caliper piston. This will help to prevent brake fluid from leaking out of the reservoir when you remove the caliper.

4. Use a wrench to loosen the brake caliper bolts. There are usually two bolts per caliper.

5. Remove the brake caliper from the rotor. Be careful not to damage the rotor.

6. Inspect the brake pads. If they are worn down to the metal backing, they need to be replaced.

7. If necessary, install new brake pads. Make sure that the new brake pads are properly seated in the caliper.

8. Reinstall the brake caliper and tighten the bolts.

9. Repeat steps 4-8 for the other wheel.

10. Once you have replaced the brake pads, fill the brake fluid reservoir to the proper level.

11. Test the brakes by pumping the brake pedal several times. The pedal should feel firm.

Tips

- If you are not comfortable changing brake pads yourself, you can have a mechanic do it for you.

- When changing brake pads, it is a good idea to inspect the brake rotors and calipers for damage. If the rotors are damaged, they will need to be replaced. If the calipers are damaged, they may need to be repaired or replaced.

- Make sure that you use the correct brake pads for your car. Using the wrong brake pads can damage your brakes.
