How do you change a power steering pump on 1996 Oldsmobile Aurora?

Here are the steps on how to change a power steering pump on a 1996 Oldsmobile Aurora.

Tools and Materials Needed

- New power steering pump

- Power steering fluid

- Funnel

- Wrench set

- Pliers

- Screwdriver

- Jack and jack stands

Instructions

1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal

Use a wrench to loosen the nut on the negative battery cable and remove the cable from the battery terminal. This will prevent any electrical shocks while you are working on the power steering pump.

2. Elevate the vehicle and locate the power steering pump

Use a jack and jack stands to elevate the front of the vehicle. You need enough space underneath the vehicle to access the power steering pump, which is located on the passenger side of the engine compartment.

3. Remove the power steering reservoir

The power steering reservoir is a small container that holds the power steering fluid. It is located next to the power steering pump. Use a screwdriver to loosen the two hose clamps that connect the reservoir to the hoses and remove the reservoir.

4. Disconnect the power steering hoses

Use a wrench to loosen the hose clamps that connect the power steering hoses to the power steering pump. Be careful not to spill any power steering fluid.

5. Remove the power steering pump pulley

The power steering pump pulley is located at the front of the power steering pump. Use a wrench to loosen the nut that holds the pulley in place and then remove the pulley.

6. Remove the power steering pump mounting bolts

There are three bolts that hold the power steering pump in place. Use a wrench to loosen the bolts and remove the power steering pump.

7. Clean the power steering pump mounting surface

Use a wire brush to clean the power steering pump mounting surface and then apply a thin coat of sealant.

8. Install the new power steering pump

Place the new power steering pump on the mounting surface and secure it in place with the three bolts.

9. Install the power steering pump pulley

Place the power steering pump pulley on the shaft and secure it in place with the nut.

10. Install the power steering reservoir

Place the power steering reservoir on the mounting bracket and secure it in place with the two hose clamps.

11. Connect the power steering hoses

Connect the power steering hoses to the power steering pump and tighten the hose clamps.

12. Fill the power steering reservoir with power steering fluid

Use a funnel to add power steering fluid to the reservoir. Add enough fluid until it reaches the "Full" mark on the reservoir.

13. Bleed the power steering system

To bleed the power steering system, start the engine and let it idle for a few minutes. Then, turn the steering wheel from left to right several times, and stop the engine. Check the power steering fluid level and add more fluid if necessary.

14. Reconnect the negative battery terminal

Reconnect the negative battery cable to the battery terminal and tighten the nut.

15. Test the power steering system

Start the engine and test the power steering system. The steering should be smooth and effortless.
