- You are at least 16 years old.
- You have a valid learner's permit or driver's license from any state.
- The scooter has a maximum engine displacement of 49 cubic centimeters (cc).
- The scooter is not capable of exceeding a speed of 30 miles per hour (mph).
You must also wear a helmet that meets the Department of Transportation (DOT) standards.
It is important to note that while you do not need a license to operate a 49cc scooter in Texas, you must still obey all traffic laws. This includes driving on the right side of the road, stopping at stop signs and red lights, and using hand signals. You should also be aware of the "move-over law," which requires you to move over or slow down when approaching a stopped emergency vehicle.
If you are caught operating a 49cc scooter without a license, you may be cited and fined. You may also be required to take a scooter safety course.
