1. Prepare your tools and materials:
- Carburetor cleaner spray
- Socket wrench set
- Phillips head screwdriver
- Flat head screwdriver
- Small brushes (toothbrush or carburetor cleaning brushes)
- Clean rag
- Small container for storing the parts
2. Remove the carburetor:
- Disconnect the fuel line by squeezing the fuel line release tab and pulling the fuel line off the carburetor.
- Remove the air filter by unscrewing the wing nut and lifting off the air filter cover.
- Remove the throttle cable by loosening the adjuster lock nut and sliding the throttle cable out of the carburetor.
- Remove the carburetor by unscrewing the mounting bolts and lifting it off the engine.
3. Disassemble the carburetor:
- Remove the float bowl by unscrewing the float bowl drain screw and removing the float bowl.
- Remove the carburetor top by unscrewing the top cover screws.
- Remove the jet needle by lifting it out of the carburetor body.
- Remove the main jet by unscrewing it with a flathead screwdriver.
- Remove the pilot jet by unscrewing it with a small Phillips head screwdriver.
4. Clean the carburetor parts:
- Spray carburetor cleaner into all of the carburetor passages and let it sit for a few minutes.
- Use the small brushes to clean any stubborn dirt or deposits from the carburetor body, jets, and other components.
- Rinse all of the parts thoroughly with clean water and let them air dry.
5. Reassemble the carburetor:
- Reinstall the pilot jet, main jet, jet needle, and carburetor top.
- Reinstall the float bowl and float bowl drain screw.
- Reinstall the throttle cable and air filter.
- Reconnect the fuel line.
6. Reinstall the carburetor:
- Place the carburetor back onto the engine and reinstall the mounting bolts.
- Reconnect any cables or hoses that were disconnected.
7. Test the carburetor:
- Turn on the fuel petcock and check for any fuel leaks.
- Start the engine and let it idle for a few minutes to make sure it is running smoothly.
- Adjust the idle speed as necessary.
Once you have completed these steps, your 1985 Honda XR200R carburetor should be clean and functioning properly.
