What was the first American car company?

The first American car company is generally considered to be Duryea Motor Wagon Company, founded in 1895 by Charles Duryea and Frank Duryea.

While other companies were experimenting with automobiles around the same time, the Duryea brothers were the first to successfully produce and sell a gasoline-powered car in the United States. Their first car, the Duryea Motor Wagon, was built in a carriage shop in Springfield, Massachusetts.
