Does the car have to be on or off check power steering fluid?

It's best to check power steering fluid with the car OFF. Here's why:

* Safety: With the engine running, the power steering system is pressurized. Opening the reservoir while the system is running can cause a dangerous spray of fluid and potential injury.

* Accurate Reading: When the car is off, the fluid level will be at its true resting point, giving you an accurate reading. If you check it with the engine on, the fluid may be temporarily displaced due to pressure.

Here's how to check power steering fluid safely:

1. Park the car on level ground.

2. Turn off the engine and let it cool down.

3. Locate the power steering fluid reservoir. It's usually a small, transparent container with a dipstick or a mark indicating the "Full" level.

4. Wipe the dipstick clean.

5. Insert the dipstick fully and remove it.

6. Check the fluid level on the dipstick. It should be within the "Full" range.

Important Note: If the fluid level is low, don't simply top it off. It's best to consult a mechanic to determine the cause of the low fluid level, as there may be a leak or other issue.
