1. Brake Pedal Switch: When you press the brake pedal, a switch is activated. This switch is typically located near the brake pedal itself. Its purpose is to complete an electrical circuit.
2. Electrical Circuit: This circuit runs from the battery, through a fuse (protecting the circuit from overloads), through the brake light switch (when activated), and then to the brake lights.
3. Brake Light Bulbs: The electrical current flows through the brake light bulbs in the tail lights. The filament in these bulbs heats up and glows, producing light.
4. Wiring Harness: A wiring harness connects all these components together, carrying the electrical current from the battery, through the switch, and to the bulbs.
5. Tail Lights: The tail lights house the brake light bulbs and lenses, which direct the light outward to be visible to other drivers.
If your brake lights aren't working, the problem could lie in any of these areas: a blown fuse, a faulty brake light switch, burnt-out bulbs, a broken wire in the wiring harness, or a problem within the tail lights themselves.
