* Turn off the car completely. Don't just turn the key to "accessory" – fully shut down the vehicle.
* Use the correct charger. Use a battery charger designed for 12-volt automotive batteries. The charger's amperage should be appropriate for the size of your Sebring's battery (check the battery itself for its amperage rating). Using too high an amperage can damage the battery.
* Connect the charger correctly. Red (+) to positive (+) terminal, black (-) to negative (-) terminal. Make sure the clamps are securely attached. Reverse polarity can severely damage the battery and the vehicle's electrical system.
* Follow the charger's instructions. Each charger has its own set of instructions; pay close attention to them.
* Ventilate the area. Car batteries release gasses, so ensure adequate ventilation while charging.
* Check for leaks or damage. Inspect the battery for any leaks or damage before attempting to charge it. If the battery case is cracked or damaged, do not attempt to charge it.
If you are uncomfortable performing this task, it's best to take your car to a mechanic or auto parts store for battery charging.
