1. Disconnect the negative terminal first: Locate the black cable connected to the battery's negative (-) terminal. Use a wrench (usually 10mm or 13mm, check your size) to loosen the nut and remove the cable.
2. Disconnect the positive terminal: Locate the red cable connected to the battery's positive (+) terminal. Again, use a wrench to loosen the nut and remove the cable.
3. Remove the hold-down clamp: There's usually a clamp or bracket securing the battery in place. This might involve loosening a bolt or wing nut. The specific type of clamp varies, so look carefully.
4. Lift out the battery: Carefully lift the battery straight up and out of its tray. Batteries are heavy, so be prepared.
Important safety precautions:
* Wear safety glasses: Battery acid is corrosive.
* Be careful not to short the terminals: Keep the disconnected cables away from each other and any metal parts of the vehicle.
* Have a helper: Batteries are heavy. A second person can make removal much safer and easier.
* Work in a well-ventilated area: Battery fumes can be harmful.
If you are uncomfortable performing this task, it's best to take your vehicle to a mechanic or auto parts store. They can easily remove and replace the battery for you.
