1996 Pontiac Bonneville sse and it keeps stalling out in me . Cannot go far stops please help i heard was a crank sensor not sure?

A stalling Bonneville SSE could indeed be the crank sensor, but it's not the only possibility. The crank position sensor (CKP) tells the engine's computer where the crankshaft is in its rotation cycle, crucial for proper fuel injection and ignition timing. A failing CKP sensor will cause a variety of problems, including stalling, especially when the engine is hot or under load.

However, several other components could also cause a similar problem:

* Mass Airflow Sensor (MAF): Measures the amount of air entering the engine. A faulty MAF sensor can provide inaccurate readings, leading to a lean fuel mixture and stalling.

* Throttle Position Sensor (TPS): Tells the computer the position of the throttle. A faulty TPS can cause erratic idle and stalling.

* Fuel Pump: If the fuel pump is weak or failing, it may not provide sufficient fuel pressure, causing stalling.

* Ignition System: Problems with the ignition coil, spark plugs, or wires can cause misfires and stalling.

* Vacuum Leaks: Leaks in the vacuum system can disrupt the engine's operation and cause stalling.

* Computer (PCM/ECM): While less common, a failing engine control module (PCM or ECM) can also cause stalling issues.

Troubleshooting Steps (Do these in order):

1. Check for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs): This is the most important first step. Use an OBD-II code reader (available cheaply at auto parts stores) to scan for any diagnostic trouble codes stored in the car's computer. These codes will give you a clue as to the potential cause of the problem.

2. Inspect the Crank Position Sensor: Locate the CKP sensor (usually near the crankshaft, but location varies by year). Visually inspect it for damage (e.g., cracks, corrosion). If it looks damaged, replace it. However, just visual inspection is not conclusive.

3. Check Fuel Pressure: Have a mechanic or use a fuel pressure gauge to check the fuel pressure. Low fuel pressure points to a fuel pump issue.

4. Inspect/Clean MAF Sensor: Carefully remove and clean the MAF sensor with MAF sensor cleaner (available at auto parts stores). Do not touch the sensor element with your fingers.

5. Check for Vacuum Leaks: Inspect all vacuum lines and hoses for cracks or leaks.

6. Check Spark: If you have some mechanical ability, you can check the spark at the spark plugs to make sure you're getting a strong spark.

Important Considerations:

* Professional Diagnosis: If you're not comfortable performing these checks yourself, take your car to a qualified mechanic. They have the tools and expertise to properly diagnose the problem and avoid unnecessary part replacements.

* Year-Specific Issues: 1996 Bonnevilles had their share of quirks. Searching online forums specific to that year and model might reveal common problems.

Don't just replace parts randomly; this is expensive and inefficient. Start with the diagnostics and proceed methodically. The DTCs are your best starting point.
