Where is the distributor cap located in engine of a 1989 Chevy Cavalier?

On a 1989 Chevy Cavalier, the distributor cap is located on top of the distributor, which is situated on the engine's passenger side (right side as you're sitting in the car), usually towards the front of the engine. It's a fairly prominent, somewhat square-ish black plastic component. You'll likely see several wires connected to it.
