When were muscle cars invented?

There's no single invention date for muscle cars. Their rise was a gradual evolution in the late 1960s, rather than a sudden creation. However, 1964-1966 is generally considered the period when the key elements coalesced to create the "muscle car" phenomenon. This is when manufacturers started putting high-performance V8 engines into relatively affordable, mid-sized cars.
