When was first gas powered car invented?

There's no single definitive answer to when the first gas-powered car was invented, as it depends on how you define "gas-powered car" and what constitutes "invention." Several inventors built self-propelled vehicles using internal combustion engines fueled by gasoline (or similar petroleum products) around the same time in the late 19th century. There's considerable debate about who deserves the title of "first." However, most historians credit Karl Benz with patenting the first practical automobile powered by an internal combustion engine in 1886. His Benz Patent-Motorwagen is widely considered the first true gas-powered car.
