While you *can* technically change the transmission fluid in a 2001 Ford Escape without changing the filter, it's
strongly discouraged. The filter traps debris and contaminants that can damage your transmission. Leaving the old, dirty filter in place defeats much of the purpose of the fluid change. New fluid circulating through a clogged filter will quickly become contaminated again, negating the benefits of the service and potentially shortening the life of your transmission.
It's best practice to always change the transmission filter along with the fluid. The added cost of the filter and the slightly increased labor are far outweighed by the potential for costly transmission repairs down the line.
