On a 1985 Chevy 350 with a HEI distributor, cylinder #1 is located at the front of the engine, passenger side. The rotor in the distributor cap will be pointing at the terminal for cylinder #1 when the engine is at its #1 TDC (Top Dead Center) firing position.
