Why is your car just reving when you accelerate?

A car that only revs but doesn't accelerate is a classic symptom of a problem with the power transfer between the engine and the wheels. Several things could be causing this:

* Transmission problems: This is the most likely culprit. Issues like a broken or slipping clutch (in manual transmissions), a faulty torque converter (in automatic transmissions), low transmission fluid, or internal transmission damage can all prevent power from reaching the wheels.

* Driveshaft problems: A broken or disconnected driveshaft prevents power from getting from the transmission to the rear wheels (in rear-wheel or all-wheel drive vehicles). A damaged U-joint within the driveshaft could also cause this.

* Differential problems: Problems within the differential (which distributes power to the wheels) can also prevent acceleration. A broken axle or a problem with the differential gears are possibilities.

* Wheel problems: While less common, a seized wheel bearing or a problem with the brakes (like the parking brake being engaged) could prevent the wheels from turning even if power is getting to them.

What to do:

Don't continue driving the car if it's only revving and not accelerating. Further damage could occur. You should:

1. Check the obvious: Ensure the parking brake is fully released. Listen carefully for any unusual noises coming from the transmission or drivetrain.

2. Get it towed: Attempting to diagnose and fix this yourself could be dangerous and may cause further damage. Have it towed to a qualified mechanic for proper diagnosis and repair.

3. Describe the problem clearly: When you call a mechanic or tow truck, be sure to describe the problem accurately: "The engine revs when I accelerate, but the car doesn't move." This will help them understand the situation immediately.

The cause needs professional diagnosis to determine the correct repair. Trying to guess based on online information is risky.
