When do you use L in an automatic transmission vehicle?

The "L" gear in an automatic transmission, often labeled "Low" or sometimes "1" (depending on the manufacturer), is used for steeper inclines or descents, or when needing significant engine braking.

It forces the transmission to stay in a lower gear ratio, allowing the engine to operate at a higher RPM. This provides more engine torque for climbing hills and more engine braking to control speed going downhill. Using "L" is helpful in situations where the automatic transmission might otherwise shift up into a higher gear too early, resulting in loss of power or insufficient control.
