Before attempting to install it, you absolutely MUST:
* Check the part numbers: Find the part number on the 1996 alternator and compare it to the part number for a 1998 3.0L Taurus alternator. If the numbers don't match, they are likely not interchangeable. You can find these numbers on a sticker on the alternator itself or by using an online auto parts store's lookup tool.
* Visually compare: If you have both alternators, visually compare the mounting brackets, pulley size and shape, and connector style. Even a slight difference could prevent installation.
Don't assume they are compatible just because they're both 3.0L Taurus alternators. Using an incompatible alternator could lead to damage.
