When do you use the overdrive button on a 1999 Ford f-150 truck?

The "overdrive" button on a 1999 Ford F-150 (and many other vehicles with automatic transmissions) is used to disengage the highest gear in the transmission.

You'd use it in situations where you need more engine braking or more power for climbing steep hills, towing heavy loads, or driving at lower speeds where the highest gear (overdrive) would cause the engine to lug or hunt for the right gear. Essentially, you use it when the engine isn't working efficiently in overdrive. Once you've passed the challenging conditions, you can usually re-engage overdrive by pressing the button again.
