If the oil light comes on, do not drive the vehicle. Continuing to drive with a low oil pressure can cause catastrophic engine damage.
Here's what you should do:
1. Check the oil level immediately. Use the dipstick to determine if the oil is low. Add oil if necessary, but only up to the "full" mark on the dipstick. However, adding oil will not solve the problem if the light remains on.
2. Check for leaks. Look under the vehicle for any signs of oil leaks.
3. If the oil level is low, and you've checked for leaks with no obvious issues, it's possible that your engine is consuming oil. This still requires immediate attention from a mechanic.
4. If the oil level is fine, or adding oil doesn't turn off the light, the problem is likely more serious, such as a faulty oil pump, a sensor issue, or other internal engine damage. You must have the vehicle towed to a mechanic for diagnosis and repair. Driving with the light on could ruin your engine.
The oil light reset is not done manually. The light turns off once the underlying oil pressure problem is addressed and corrected.
