If it's integrated into the alternator: You won't see a separate voltage regulator. The regulator is *inside* the alternator casing. The alternator itself is a fairly large component, usually attached to the engine block by a belt. It's typically cylindrical or rectangular with wires coming out of it. To see the regulator, you'd have to take the alternator apart.
If it's a separate unit: It would be a small, roughly rectangular box, possibly with some heat sinks or fins for cooling, and several wires connected to it. However, this is less likely in a 1989 Comanche.
To find it: Your best bet is to consult a wiring diagram for your specific 1989 Jeep Comanche (based on engine type). A repair manual (Haynes or Chilton) will be extremely helpful here. The diagram will show you where the voltage regulator is located and what it connects to. Tracing the wires from the alternator is another approach, but a diagram makes the process much easier and less prone to error.
