Here's what you need to know:
* If your Liberty has Command-Trac (part-time 4WD): This system has a rotary dial, usually located on the center console, with positions for 2WD High, 4WD High, and Neutral. To engage 4WD High, you'll need to stop the vehicle completely, select 4WD High, and then proceed carefully. Using 4WD High on dry pavement can damage the drivetrain. This system does *not* have a 4WD Low setting.
* If your Liberty has Freedom Drive I (full-time 4WD): This system is automatically engaged all the time. There's no switch to turn it on or off; it constantly distributes power between the front and rear axles. You don't need to do anything; it's always in 4WD.
* If your Liberty has Freedom Drive II (full-time 4WD with low range): Similar to Freedom Drive I, this is a full-time system. However, it also has a button (often labeled "4LO" or similar) to engage a low-range gear ratio for extra traction in low-speed, off-road situations. Engage this button only when needed at low speeds.
Before attempting to use 4WD, consult your owner's manual. It contains crucial information specific to your Liberty's drivetrain and instructions on proper use. Improper use of 4WD can damage your vehicle's drivetrain.
