1. Preparation:
- Ensure that the Model T is on level ground and the parking brake is engaged.
- Familiarize yourself with the location and function of the starting components:
- Spark advance lever
- Throttle lever
- Choke lever
- Ignition switch
2. Cranking the Engine:
- Open the fuel valve located under the front seat to allow fuel flow to the engine.
- Move the spark advance lever fully counterclockwise to its most retarded position.
- Set the throttle lever to a low idle position, usually one notch above the fully closed position.
- Turn on the ignition switch to the "On" position.
- Use the hand crank to turn the engine over. Hold the crank handle securely and turn it clockwise firmly until the engine starts to fire and run.
3. Adjusting Choke and Spark:
- As the engine starts to run, adjust the choke lever as necessary to regulate the air and fuel mixture.
- Gradually advance the spark advance lever clockwise to its fully advanced position.
- Continue to crank the engine until it runs smoothly and consistently on its own.
4. Setting Throttle and Idle:
- Once the engine is running, set the throttle lever to a higher idle speed to keep the engine running smoothly.
- Adjust the spark advance lever to fine-tune the engine's performance and optimize fuel efficiency.
- Ensure that the engine idles smoothly and does not stall or surge.
5. Driving the Model T:
- Once the engine is running smoothly, you can engage the low-speed gear lever and start driving the Model T.
- Use the throttle and spark advance levers to adjust the engine's speed and power output as needed.
Note: It's essential to exercise caution when starting a Model T, as the hand crank can generate a powerful kickback if the engine fires unexpectedly. Always hold the crank securely and take necessary precautions to avoid injury.
