How to Replace a Fuel Sending Unit in a Mercury Cougar

Tools and materials needed:

- 10mm socket wrench

- 15mm socket wrench

- Crescent wrench

- Flat-head screwdriver

- Phillips-head screwdriver

- Hammer

- Replacement fuel sending unit

- Fuel line

- Gasket

Instructions:

1. Park the vehicle on a level surface and turn off the engine.

2. Open the trunk and remove the spare tire.

3. Locate the fuel sending unit access hole, which is usually located under the spare tire well.

4. Remove the cover from the access hole.

5. Disconnect the fuel line by unclamping it with a flat-head screwdriver.

6. Use a 10mm socket wrench to remove the bolts holding the fuel sending unit in place.

7. Carefully remove the fuel sending unit from the tank, taking care not to spill any fuel.

8. Inspect the gasket on the fuel sending unit for damage or deterioration. If the gasket is damaged, it must be replaced.

9. Place the new gasket on the fuel sending unit.

10. Re-insert the fuel sending unit into the tank and tighten the bolts with a 10mm socket wrench.

11. Re-attach the fuel line by clamping it with a flat-head screwdriver.

12. Replace the cover on the access hole.

13. Reinstall the spare tire.

14. Start the engine and check for leaks. If there are any leaks, tighten the bolts until the leak stops.

The fuel sending unit is located in the fuel tank, under the rear seat. To access it, you will need to remove the rear seat and then the fuel tank. Once the fuel tank is removed, you will be able to see the fuel sending unit. It is held in place by a few bolts, which you can remove with a wrench. Once the bolts are removed, you can pull the fuel sending unit out of the tank.
