The first self-propelled road vehicle was built by French inventor Nicholas-Joseph Cugnot who named it "fardier à vapeur" (steam dray) that means a steam-powered cart (or wagon) in present English; Cugnot's invention is seen as the first automobile, although it's extremely rudimentary.
