Obtain the necessary tools: You'll need a timing light, a wrench, and a spark plug wire remover (optional).
Locate the timing marks:
1. Open the hood of your vehicle and locate the distributor cap on the front of the engine.
2. Near the distributor cap, you should find timing marks on both the engine block and the harmonic balancer (the large pulley at the front of the engine). The marks typically consist of a line or notch on the balancer and a corresponding mark on the engine block.
Connect the timing light:
1. Connect the timing light's inductive clamp around one of the spark plug wires. This will serve as the pickup for the timing signal.
2. Connect the timing light's power and ground leads to the vehicle's battery.
3. Start the engine and allow it to reach its normal operating temperature.
Aim the timing light:
1. Direct the timing light toward the timing marks on the harmonic balancer.
2. Hold the timing light steady and observe the timing marks as the engine runs.
Adjust the timing:
If the timing marks do not align, you may need to adjust the timing.
1. Loosen the distributor hold-down bolt or clamp.
2. Once the distributor is loose, slowly rotate it clockwise or counterclockwise while observing the timing marks.
3. Adjust the timing until the marks align correctly. This adjustment directly impacts the spark timing.
4. Tighten the distributor hold-down bolt once the timing is correct.
5. Turn off the engine and disconnect the timing light.
6. Reattach the distributor cap (if removed).
