How do you install a serpentine belt on 1997 Ford F 150 pick up?

Tools Needed:

- New serpentine belt

- 1/2 inch square ratchet and extension

- 3/8 inch ratchet

- 3/8 inch sockets (10 mm, 13 mm, and 15 mm)

- Breaker bar

Instructions

1. Locate the serpentine belt tensioner. On a 1997 Ford F-150 pick-up, it is located on the passenger side of the engine, just below the power steering pump.

2. Using the 1/2-inch square ratchet and extension, loosen the tensioner bolt. Turn the tensioner bolt to release the tension on the belt enough to be removed.

3. Remove the belt from around the tensioner and all of the pulleys it routes around.

4. Place the new belt around the tensioner and pulleys, making sure that it is routed correctly according to the diagram in the owner’s manual. Note that the smooth (flat side) of the belt should be against the tensioner pulley.

5. To get the belt in the correct position it may be necessary to use the 3/8 inch ratchet and appropriate socket to rotate one or more of the components the serpentine belt routes around. If the belt does not fit in place due to the tension of the automatic belt tensioner, use a breaker bar and insert it between the belt and one of the pulleys. Gently pry the bar to create sufficient slack to fit the belt.

6. Tighten the tensioner bolt until the belt is snug. Be careful not to over-tighten the bolt, as this can damage the tensioner.
