- Harmonic Balancer Installer
- Torque Wrench
- Thread Sealer
- Clean Rags
- Oil Filter Wrench
- Safety Glasses
Instructions:
1. Disconnect the Battery:
WARNING: Ensure that the ignition key is out, and the vehicle is powered off before proceeding. It's safer to disconnect the battery before working near electrical components.
- Unbolt the negative (-) battery cable from the battery terminal using the wrench and gently pry the cable away.
2. Remove Engine Oil and Oil Filter:
NOTE: Removing engine oil and the oil filter will allow access to the harmonic balancer.
- Place the oil drain pan under the oil drain plug.
- Use the appropriate oil filter wrench to loosen the oil filter and extract it.
- Allow all the engine oil to drain into the pan.
3. Remove the Crankshaft Pulley Bolt:
- Install the harmonic balancer puller tool onto the crankshaft pulley bolt.
- Use the appropriate socket and ratchet to turn the puller bolt until the crankshaft pulley pops out.
4. Remove the Old Harmonic Balancer:
- Once the crankshaft pulley is popped out, remove the harmonic balancer installer tool.
- Carefully use a wedge or gentle prying tool to remove the old harmonic balancer.
5. Clean the Crankshaft Surface:
- Use clean rags to remove any debris, dirt, or oil from the crankshaft surface where the new harmonic balancer will be installed.
6. Apply Thread Sealer to New Balancer Bolt:
- Apply a small amount of thread sealer to the threads of the new harmonic balancer bolt. This helps prevent leaks and ensures secure installation.
7. Install the New Harmonic Balancer:
- Place the new harmonic balancer on the crankshaft.
- Hand-tighten the harmonic balancer bolt first.
- Once the bolt is snug, use a torque wrench to tighten the bolt to the specified torque as per your vehicle's repair manual.
8. Reinstall Crankshaft Pulley:
- Place the crankshaft pulley back on the crankshaft.
- Secure it by tightening the crankshaft pulley bolt. Again, use a torque wrench to ensure proper tightness.
9. Reinstall Oil Filter and Top Up Engine Oil:
- Reinstall the oil filter; turn it clockwise until snug, but don't over-tighten.
- Using a funnel, add new engine oil to your vehicle as per the manufacturer's recommendations.
10. Reconnect the Battery:
- Reconnect the negative (-) battery cable to the battery terminal.
11. Start the Engine:
- Start the engine to check for proper functioning. Monitor for any unusual noises, leaks, or vibrations.
12. Test Drive and Verify:
- Take the vehicle for a test drive and ensure that the engine runs smoothly and there are no issues.
IMPORTANT: Always refer to the specific repair manual for your vehicle model and year for exact specifications, bolt sizes, and torque values.
