1. Prepare the trailer. Before you can title your trailer, it must be completed and in a safe and roadworthy condition. Trailers that are constructed over 2,500 lbs GVWR must undergo an inspection. To schedule a trailer inspection, visit or contact your local inspection facility.
2. Gather the required documents. You will need to gather the following documents to title your trailer:
* A completed Application for Certificate of Title (Form MV-1).
* If the trailer GVWR is over 2,500 lbs, you will need a completed Vehicle Inspection Form (Form MV-10-A).
* Proof of ownership, such as a bill of sale or a previous title.
* If applicable, a weight slip.
3. Go to the Revenue Office Take the completed MV-1 and MV-10-A forms (if required), proof of ownership, and any other required documents to your local Revenue Office.
4. Pay the title and registration fees. The fee for a title is $15. The fee for a license plate is $20. If the trailer GVWR is over 2,500 lbs, an addition $13.50 plate fee will be collected with the $20 registration fee.
5. Receive your title and license plate. Once you have paid the fees, you will be given a title and a license plate for your trailer.
Additional Notes:
- When you apply for a title and license plate, you will also be required to provide proof of insurance.
- Homemade trailers may be subject to additional regulations, such as safety inspections and size restrictions. Please consult with your local Revenue Office for more information on specific regulations.
