1. Disconnect the battery.
* Open the hood of your van and locate the battery.
* Use a wrench to loosen and remove the negative battery terminal.
* Be sure to disconnect the negative terminal first to avoid sparking.**
2. Remove the serpentine belt.
* Locate the serpentine belt that runs around your engine.
* Use a wrench to loosen the tensioner pulley and remove the belt.
3. Unplug the wiring from the alternator.
* Locate the wiring harness that plugs into the alternator.
* Disconnect the wiring harness by squeezing the release tab and pulling the connector apart.
4. Remove the alternator bolts.
* Locate the two bolts that hold the alternator in place.
* Use a wrench to loosen and remove the bolts.
5. Remove the alternator.
* Once the bolts are removed, you can lift the alternator out of the engine bay.
6. Install the new alternator.
* Place the new alternator into the engine bay.
* Bolt the alternator in place.
* Be careful not to overtighten the bolts.**
7. Reconnect the wiring harness.
* Reconnect the wiring harness to the alternator by plugging it in and squeezing the release tab until it clicks into place.
8. Install the serpentine belt.
* Install the serpentine belt around the engine.
* Tighten the tensioner pulley to put tension on the belt.
9. Reconnect the battery.
* Reconnect the negative battery terminal to the battery.
10. Start your van and check the charging system.
* Turn the key and let the van run for a few minutes.
* Use a voltmeter to check the voltage at the battery.
* It should read between 13 and 14 volts.
If your voltmeter does not read between 13 and 14 volts, there may be an issue with the charging system.
