Stay calm and don't panic.
1. Unbuckle your seatbelt and open the window. If the window is stuck, use a sharp object to break it.
2. Get out of the vehicle and swim to the surface. If you can't swim, hold onto something that will float and help you stay afloat.
3. Once you reach the surface, call for help. If you're in a remote area, try to find a way to signal for help, such as using a flashlight or waving your arms.
4. Stay in the water until help arrives. Don't try to swim to shore unless you're confident you can make it safely.
5. If you start to feel hypothermic, try to find a way to stay warm. Huddle together with other survivors and cover your face and head to prevent heat loss.
6. Don't give up hope. Rescue may take time, but it will come.
Here are some additional tips for escaping from a sinking vehicle:
* If the vehicle is sinking slowly, you may have time to remove some items that will help you stay afloat, such as a life jacket or a piece of foam.
* If the vehicle is sinking rapidly, you may not have time to do anything but escape.
* If you're in a vehicle with other people, help them to escape first.
* If you're in a vehicle that's on fire, escape as quickly as possible. The fire will spread quickly and make it impossible to escape if you wait too long.
