How much carbon dioxide emissions come from cars?

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, transportation accounted for 29% of total U.S. greenhouse gas emissions in 2020. Of that, cars and light trucks made up over half (52%), or about 15% of total U.S. greenhouse gas emissions.

Globally, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) estimated that the transport sector accounted for about 24% of direct CO2 emissions from fuel combustion in 2010. Of that, road transport (including cars, trucks, and buses) made up the vast majority (72%).

It's important to note that these are just rough estimates, and the specific amount of carbon dioxide emissions from cars can vary depending on factors such as the type of car, the age of the car, the fuel efficiency of the car, and the distance driven.
