Turn off the engine and leave the key in the ignition. This will ensure the electrical system does not drain the battery while you work.
Open the hood of the car. Some models may require a special tool to do this.
Locate the battery. The battery is usually located in the engine bay, near the firewall.
Disconnect the negative battery terminal (the black one). Use a wrench to loosen the nut that holds the terminal in place. Take the terminal off and pull it away from the battery.
Disconnect the positive battery terminal (the red one). Do this in the same way you did for the negative terminal.
Remove the battery hold-down clamp. This clamp is usually located at the top of the battery.
Lift the battery out of the car. Use the battery's carrying handle to do this.
Clean the battery terminals and posts with a wire brush. This is to remove any corrosion that may have built up.
Apply a thin coat of grease to the battery terminals and posts. This will help to prevent corrosion.
Lower the new battery into the car. Make sure that the terminals are aligned with the posts.
Replace the battery hold-down clamp. Tighten the nut that holds the clamp in place.
Reconnect the positive battery terminal. Tighten the nut that holds the terminal in place.
Reconnect the negative battery terminal. Tighten the nut that holds the terminal in place.
Start the engine. The car should start up normally.
Close the hood of the car.
