Who invented the police car?
In 1899, the Akron, Ohio Police Department purchased the first police patrol wagon, a Waverly electric automobile. The Waverly was a two-man vehicle with a top speed of 18 miles per hour. Soon, other police departments began purchasing electric vehicles for patrol use. However, the electric patrol cars were not very successful. They were expensive, had a limited range, and could not be driven in bad weather. In 1908, the Detroit Police Department purchased the first gasoline-powered police car. The gasoline-powered police car was much more successful than the electric patrol car. It was faster, had a longer range, and could be driven in all weather conditions. By 1915, gasoline-powered police cars were being used by police departments all over the United States.
