The Willys MB, the first mass-produced light reconnaissance 4x4 car, was used in large numbers during World War II by the United States and its allies. The Willys MB was designed in 1940 and production began in 1941. The Humvee, originally called the High-Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV), was designed in the United States in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Production started in 1983.
