The history of the Jeep begins with the Bantam Reconnaissance Car, a 4-wheel-drive vehicle developed in 1940 by the American Bantam Car Company. The U.S. Army was looking for a lightweight, all-terrain vehicle that could be used for reconnaissance and combat missions. Bantam submitted its prototype, the BRC-40, which competed against vehicles from Willys-Overland and Ford.
In 1941, the U.S. Army chose the Willys-Overland vehicle, the MA, as the standard light reconnaissance vehicle for the U.S. military. The MA was also produced by Ford, which called its version the GPW. The vehicles were soon nicknamed "Jeeps," and the name became the official designation for the vehicles in 1945.
